The system of muscles, ligaments and fascia that lies at the base of the bony pelvis is referred to as the pelvic floor. These structures connect between the tailbone, pubic bone and āsit bonesā (ischial tuberosities) of the pelvis. The pelvic floor is frequently involved in pelvic health conditions, as it has several important functions: it supports the pelvic organs, provides stability for the pelvis and torso, helps maintain urinary and fecal continence, aids in sexual function, and contributes to healthy circulation. Pelvic health physical therapy is specialty rehabilitation for conditions related to the pelvis.
If you answer āyesā to any of the following questions, you would likely benefit from pelvic physical therapy:
- Do you have pain in the pelvic floor region (that is: genitals, perineum, bladder area, or pain with urination or defecation)?
- Bladder symptoms: Do you find yourself frequently going to the bathroom, having trouble starting or stopping the stream of urine, or do you experience any accidental loss of urine?Ā
- Bowel symptoms: Do you experience accidental loss of gas or stool, straining or pain to pass a bowel movement, difficulty initiating a bowel movement, or insufficient emptying of a bowel movement?Ā
- Do you find yourself going to the restroom more frequently than others around you or do you wake two or more times in the night to urinate?Ā
- Have you had low back, hip, tailbone, groin or sciatica pain that hasnāt resolved with prior treatment?Ā
- Do you have pain with sexual activity?Ā
1128 NE 2nd Street, Suite 201, Corvallis, Oregon 97330
We are located in the Beaver Sports Medicine Complex. Enter the main building farthest from the street. You can take the elevator to the right or enter the door straight ahead and walk up the stairs. Our suite is to the left of the elevator or straight ahead of the stairway.
Each appointment runs 40-45 minutes long.
The first appointment tends to be more conversational than most. The therapist will ask you questions to learn more about your symptoms and limitations. She will take measurements to assess your mobility and strength. If indicated, if appropriate, and if you provide consent, there is often a minimally invasive internal examination the first or second visit. Together you will work to establish goals for your rehabilitation. Your therapist will initiate treatment, educate you about your condition, and give you a home program and other ideas you can immediately implement to manage your symptoms.
The examination is similar to a gynecological examination, without any instruments. You will be draped appropriately throughout. Should you have further concerns, please call our office and one of our specialists would be happy to give you more details and answer your questions over the phone prior to your appointment.
In Oregon, minors 15 years of age or older can consent to medical services. If you are under the age of 15, you must have a parent or guardian provide signed consent. Regardless of your age, you are always welcome to bring a chaperone for a portion or all of your appointment to make you feel more comfortable. Pending availability, we would also be happy to have an additional team member sit in on a portion or all of your appointment.
It is best to wear clothing you can move comfortably in. The therapist may need access to the area you are being treated for, so dressing to allow for this is helpful. If necessary, we do provide shorts or a medical gown.
Absolutely not! Our therapists are experienced and comfortable examining regardless of where you are in your menstrual cycle. If you are not comfortable undergoing an internal examination or internal work while menstruating, there are plenty of other interventions that can be performed to get you back to doing more of what you love!
